Look Solutions Unique 2.1 hazer hire

Haze is what makes a beam of light visible, and the Unique is the machine that does it best. It hangs a fine, dry haze evenly across a room and keeps it there for hours on very little fluid — which is why it is the hazer designers specify by name rather than by category. New to the fleet, and hired with fluid and its flightcase.

A hazer earns its place by disappearing. Done well, nobody in the audience sees haze at all; they see the light doing something it could not do in clear air — a beam crossing the stage, a shaft through a doorway, depth behind a dancer. The Unique 2.1 is the machine that gets closest to that, and it is worth the difference on a show where the lighting is the point.

What sets it apart is the size of the particle. The haze it makes is fine enough to stay suspended and spread out on its own, so a room fills evenly and stays that way rather than drifting in visible clouds and needing topping up between numbers. It uses very little fluid doing it: two litres in the tank is good for up to fifty hours of output, so one fill covers a run rather than a night.

It wants switching on before the audience comes in, not during the show. Give it time to fill the room and it holds; try to build haze in a scene change and you will see it arrive, which is the one thing haze is supposed not to do. We will tell you how long to leave it for your room.

Control runs from the lighting desk on DMX, so output sits on a fader alongside everything else and the level can come down for a scene that does not want it. The machine takes a TRUE1 mains inlet and we send the lead to suit an ordinary 13A socket.

One warning worth having early, and it is the same for any haze: it will find the smoke detectors. Talk to whoever manages the building well before the day — most venues can isolate the relevant heads, but it has to be arranged in advance and cannot be sorted on the afternoon.

If all you need is for your beams to show, the Equinox Stage Haze at £20 a day does that for less. Take the Unique when the haze itself has to be invisible, when the room is large, or when a designer has asked for it.

What you get

The machine in its flightcase, with the mains lead for a normal 13A socket
Fluid for the event — tell us how many performances and we will send enough
DMX control so output can be run from the lighting desk
A technician to set it up, place it and time the pre-heat, if you would rather not

Good for

Dance shows, where the side light has to be visible in the air
Concerts and band nights with moving lights or beam effects
Musicals and plays that want depth behind the actors rather than a flat wash
Large halls where a cheaper hazer struggles to fill the room evenly
Any show where a lighting designer has specified a Unique

What you need to know

Haze or smoke
Haze hangs evenly and makes light beams visible all evening. Smoke billows and clears, and is for moments. They do different jobs, and plenty of shows hire both.
Why this one
Very fine, very even output that holds for hours on little fluid. It is the machine to take when the lighting is doing the work.
Smoke detectors
It will find them. Arrange isolation with the venue in advance — this cannot be sorted on the afternoon.
When to switch it on
Before the audience comes in. Haze wants time to fill the room; built during a show, you see it arrive.
Fluid
Supplied. Say how many performances and we will send enough.
Power
A TRUE1 inlet on the machine, and we send the lead for an ordinary 13A socket.

Rates are per day and exclude VAT. A longer hire costs less per day — tell us your dates and we will price the period exactly. Ask us about delivery and hiring with a technician.

Alternatives

Equinox Stage Haze 1500 — the cheaper hazer at £20 a day — enough to make beams show in a school hall.

Antari ZR1500 smoke machine — for entrances and transitions rather than atmosphere — smoke billows and clears.
